Résumé

Artist Statement

I think about traces—big traces like a memory, little traces like the stone I pick up on a walk, a picture I snap on my phone, or a card someone gave to me.  They have meaning as lucky charms, a piece of history, or a story to be retold.  There is also a commonality as we all find and leave traces in the world.  I am mindful about this—collecting, examining, curating, and displaying my finds around me in my studio.  While I can relate to them, I can also change what they are and how they’re seen by placing them in another context. I select a support- a found window or door, a canvas or a panel of wood, a disintegrating flag or blanket. Objects that are used and have a history. They remind me of a space in my mind, a thought I had contemplated, a dream I had. I paint scenes from an excursion, a conversation heard, an activity that leaves me wondering. I add marks and shapes by carving into the wooden elements, by adding layers of materials, or attaching items from my troves.  Each artwork is a compilation of a time and place specifically rendered with materials that assist me in exploring experiences. They are collections of ephemera  that manifest memory and connections in our lives.
