INLIQUID MEMBER

Embark on a journey through a vibrant world inspired by the abstraction of realism and the space we inhabit with artist Donna Backues and her mixed-media paintings. The use of different textures, glosses, patterns, and colors in her work are taken from nature, urban society, emotions, experience, and memory to weave together a narrative that is often overlooked: that there is magic and there is beauty in the world around us, and we can find that beauty if we take the time to see it.
Backues is an artist that has a history of traveling: She has moved to Indonesia with her family where she worked in a grass roots development organization while simultaneously focusing on art and learning through culture and language studies. In Southeast Asia, she practiced the Javanese technique of batik, which is the process of making colorful designs and patterns on textiles through dye. In this process, parts that are meant to remain undyed are coated with a layer of wax to protect them. She has devoted her creative mind to charity by kick-starting health programs as well as designing teaching aids for development projects and disaster relief.
This weekend At Blick Art Materials, Philadelphia, you can get to know and meet with Donna Backues, discuss her work and her experiences with her, and watch a live demonstration of her artistic process. On Saturday, November 12th, from 1 – 3 pm, Donna will be presenting Mixed Watermedia Abstraction techniques.
