Artist Statement
My sculpture and installations draw comparisons between the organization we find in nature and that which we impose upon the world. I reference human constructs such as maps, books, and architecture while using materials that are delicate and flawed, drawing an ambiguous line between the natural and the human-made. These form-relationships allow me to explore a social construct and its overlap with nature. In the “Collective Memory” series, fragile leaves imprinted with maps of recent natural disaster sites (New Orleans, Sri Lanka, Haiti, California) call to mind our dependence on a natural order and also the proliferation of news media that binds us to those who have experienced its disruption. “We are a river”, by utilizing the entire 2007 Wilmington, DE White Pages, is a snapshot of an ever changing population that fills the “permanent” structure of the city of Wilmington — just like the Christina River that flows through the city. Throughout my work, a broader theme of fragility, impermanence and flux is conveyed through the delicate materials chosen: translucent papers, thin fabrics, and flexible wire.
