Artist Statement
I have a perennial interest in the connections between humankind and the natural world. My recent research has been invested in combining imagery of landscape with photographs and drawings of wildlife and a tertiary element of elegant, feminine patterns. The juxtaposition of organic, natural, landscape-derived images to the fine, detailed, textile-reminiscent patterning makes an interesting contrast. This contrast calls to mind a struggle between allowing nature to be itself, undisturbed, and humankind’s desire to move, shape and alter the landscape for a multitude of reasons.
Most recently, my studio practice has been invested in photographing the landscape of Allegany County, New York. This immediate area where I live and work is rich in natural beauty and agricultural resources, but also rural and economically depressed. I strive to speak into and accentuate the richness of abundant wildlife and stunning visual scenery that contradict the economic depression. I translate photographs through digital manipulation and drawing processes to printmaking matrixes, which I then layer with images sourced from antique textile patterns and topographical maps. My work makes a commentary about the mark humans make when they change and alter the landscape, and how cultivation of backyard gardens, housing development, and farm fields can all make an environmental and cultural change. All of this connects to my interests in exploring how landscape and environment affects the human climate.
