Artist Statement

“An object or place achieves concrete reality when our experience of it is total, that is, through all the senses as well as with the active and reflexive mind.”
—Yi-Fu Tuan (from Space and Place)

How can experience, bound by time, be located? How can image-making become a means for layering physical, emotional, and mental conceptions of space? By employing rigorous means of visually dissecting and translating photographic artifacts of my experiences of specific sites in a number of international cities (including Rome, New York, Istanbul, Berlin, and Rio de Janeiro), I am attempting to dissolve the (linguistically determined) dichotomies between external and internal, organic and geometric, presentness and memory, thought and feeling.

Within the history of landscape painting, much of the significance lies in the means by which an image is made, its processes and methods of realization into form—in other words, the artist’s translation of experience into image. In this particular case, some of the questions posed by my process are: Can abstraction be reinvigorated through methodologies that bring form into closer contact with the corporal without falling back on art historical modes of depiction? Can the formal dynamism of modernist abstraction be extended through the intellectual rigor of conceptual art and the visual flexibility of digital technology while using place as an objective starting point? How can new forms of depiction grow out of the rigorous “collaboration” of digital technology and traditional art making techniques?

My goal is to push down underneath the appearance of the visual environment in order to articulate something more basic about the mental, emotional, and physical rhythm of moving through space, and the experience of particularly salient locations in the urban environment.
