Artist Statement

I always enjoyed making small sketches and doodles as a way of studying and understanding the relationship of appearance and reality. These were undertaken privately, with no thought of sharing them beyond occasional sketches to enhance photo albums. But when I returned to Philadelphia in late 2007, I enrolled for a painting course at the Academy of Fine Arts. And then I went out to buy a few brushes and some oil paints.

I’ve found that painting offers me a pathway to understand, to get inside, the world around me, to express an intimacy between me and the object of my observation, whether that subject is personal (as in a portrait), animate, or inanimate. I continue studies of painting techniques with Masters of the Art, to explore the myriad of ways to create portraits and visual images that resonate with impact and sensitivity.

Portraits and Cityscapes are the major focus of my work. My portraits probe the unique character and humanity of the model as I perceive him/her/it. They are based on a personal relationship, formed through some combination of conversation, research, and knowledge of the model’s background and interests. My cityscapes explore the significance of the built environment that is reflected in the visual personality, adaptation of function, and significance of the vistas we so often see without seeing.
