Artist Statement

Since childhood, I have been drawn to man’s earliest cultures. Working with original pottery methods (pinch, coil, terra sigillata and pit fire) allows me to connect with humanity’s roots and the earth. Using this nexus as a starting point, I handbuild all my vessels using pinch and coil techniques. I work intuitively, letting each piece evolve. My work has grown from simple vase forms to more complex sculptural ones rooted in the figurative and the feminine. I concern myself with organic fluidity and focus intently on the lines and edges of each piece. Each curve I create, challenges me to craft a balance within the piece and relationships between its sections. I sometimes counterpoint this intention with the random effects of a smoke fire.
