Artist Statement

Thereʼs delight in selecting from the profusion of materials found in nature, then assembling relief surfaces for painting to ground the process in a tangible connection to the earth.

Meanwhile, working directly with earth, for two decades Iʼve been making handbuilt stoneware vessels: hollow earth forms that evoke female bodies.

And now, for the past couple years, the ancestor presences and nature beings that show up in my paintings have been taking form in new hollow torso sculptures.

Building these mythical bodies out of wet clay has been a challenge and a steep learning curve; who is actually going to make her appearance? The mystery of each evolving form compels me to keep on developing them.

Then, the extreme heat of the firing process totally transforms her personality, and reveals new levels of expression in her face and demeanor.
