Artist Statement

Leo Hylan considers himself a Multimedia Artist who creates using a variety of media that include Digital Art, Mixed Media, Film, Video, Photography, Installation, and Performance. His work seems to divide into two distinct directions. Both are a way in which he deals with the profound tragedies that have shaped his life. Before the age of thirty Leo lost his only sister from epilepsy at eighteen and his mother from a brain tumor. He and his wife continue to live with Chronic Pain conditions and both had major back surgeries in their twenties.

The first of these two distinct directions is confrontation. Leo engages with brutal honesty when confronting issues of the self; as well as, the society at around him. This honesty provides the work he creates with a unique narrative. Furthermore, by recognizing an objective truth within larger geo-political narratives, Hylan creates with daily, recognizable elements; and unprecedented situations in which the viewer is confronted with the conditioning of the viewers perception, which forces them to reconsider their biased position.

The second distinct direction and approach of his work is much more abstract. These artworks do not reference recognizable form and therefore become an experimentation in escape. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. By applying abstraction, he tries to approach a variety of subjects in a multi-layered way in order to spark an involvement with the viewer.

His work urges us to renegotiate media art as being part of a reactive comment on oppressing themes in our contemporary society; as well as, the issues of oppression within ourselves. Using a conceptual approach, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, that lure the viewer round and round in circles. His work directly responds to the surrounding environment and focuses on the the beauty that is hidden from our everyday experiences. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. Leo creates so that he can make a connection, because it is through this connection that he can overcome suffering and enlightenment can be attained.
