I find the challenges involved in printmaking often push my drawing to develop more interesting spatial relationships, textures, and rhythms. Drafting, carving, inking, printing, redrawing, more carving and printing; all are stages in the life of each piece.
I draw from the city around me. I draw the limits and the expanses, the grand architecture and the graffiti, the planned and the accidental.
Through layers of drawing I introduce bold, overarching patterns and contrasting colors to my woodblock prints. It creates a sense of excitement and drama. The warm texture of the block comes through and plays a significant role in creating a heartbeat in each print. Something natural, soft, and subtle.
Lisa Imperiale is a graduate from Moore College of Art & Design. She is an active member of BYO Print, East Kensington’s very own collective printmaking studio. Working primarily in relief, Lisa has developed a body of woodblock prints, and founded Imperiale Prints, a line of block printed stationary, books, and gifts. The work is a colorful, abstract reflection of life in a vibrant artistic neighborhood of North East Philadelphia.
