Artist Statement

Color is my primary source of inspiration. I use a palette of pure spectrum colors to explore the properties of specific pigments. In the process of layering the paint, elusive suggestions appear, guiding the creation of the images. My years of teaching color theory and my study of botanical forms complement this intuitive approach. I work on many paintings at once, developing a dialogue that connects color, form, and meaning in the body of work. An analogy of pigment as part of the earth makes my paintings exist in the natural world of birth, growth, and decay.

A passion for music translates into the harmony I seek in color relationships. I search for an exquisite chord that transcends the individual notes until I find visual perfect pitch. My paintings have been described as “undulating rhythms of color and line that remind one of inhalation and exhalation — the very sign of existence.”
