Artist Statement

My practice involves dialogue between order and chaos. Playing between the additive and subtractive process, the making and unmaking, perpetually experimenting with the physical properties of paint. I work to a place where I am loose control of the painting. Struggling back from that moment, I strain to hear an interior alphabet that leaks out; a language that I have to relearn and translate every time I start on a new work. The gestures, marks and color – free of the dependence on figure or object, like music tell no stories, illustrate nothing, and launch no myths. I work to evoke the incommunicable, where line becomes thought, where color becomes existence. Where there is space to dream between turbulent and serene.

My Road Rage photography series tackles these same problems, and attempts to capture this same dynamic, through the lens of the camera. While walking the streets of Philadelphia, I am always on the lookout for ambiguous accidents of beauty and power, ground into the common pavement.
