Artist Statement
Drawing is the heart of who I am: I have always drawn, even when the act of drawing didn’t always show above the surface of my professional life. I draw because I love to, and I draw in order to understand myself and the world around me, and I draw to share what I know and value with others. I am a teacher in my art and in my writing, including my blog about art and art history, as well as when I’m in a classroom teaching art, art history, or children’s literature. My books are an expression of all of the above. I am a practitioner of drawing and words, I love making things, and I love books. I love the interesting world of visual objects, which includes everything from Rembrandt to family pictures to news photos to weird, brightly colored bugs. I am committed to sharing what I know and love with those who care to listen and look. My drawings and my books, which often combine drawing and words, are my personal offering of knowledge and delight in the visual world and what it means for all of us who live in it.
These drawings are done with ink and colored ink on paper. Editions of books are printed with archival processes on archival paper.
