Artist Bio

Barbara Mink was born in Buffalo, New York and started painting in 1998. She studied with several prominent artists but is largely self taught. The daughter of an artist, she absorbed the love of creation, and went from watercolor botanical illustration to oil figurative painting to acrylics, inks and mixed media abstracts.

Mink is an active member of the State of the Art Gallery in Ithaca and the Greater Ithaca Art Trail, as well as the Buffalo Society of Artists and Western NY Artists Group. She is represented by 60 East Gallery in Corning, NY, Art Matters Consultants in Washington, DC, Indigo Art Consultants, London England, and Velvenoir for European sales.

Her work can be found in collections in Ithaca, New York City, Buffalo, Virginia, North Carolina, California, Alaska, Israel, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Washington, and Florida.

“Inspired by what Robert Rosenblum called “the limit of the visible,” I feel a kinship with 19th-century Northern Romantic artists such as Friedrich and Turner, stirred by their sense of scale and heroic theatricality. Even when tending toward monochromatic, color is always an important part of my work: it is energy, emotion, life, and it brings joy and quickens the blood. Whatever I devise in terms of hue, saturation, and vibrancy must be met with a restraining force or structure, and I increasingly explore processes that set different qualities of color, pigment, and texture against each other, even allowing for and embracing dissonance or jolie laide.

A Summa cum Laude graduate of SUNY Buffalo, she moved to Ithaca, New York in 1976 where she pursued a PhD in Comparative Literature, was a freelance actor in television and radio commercials, News Director of a radio station, and earned an MA degree in History from Cornell University in 1986. In 1989 Mink was elected to the Tompkins County Legislature and served for 12 years, five of which as Chair. In 2001 she founded the Light in Winter Festival of Science and Art. She has taught Oral and Written Communication for MBAs at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management since 1986.
