Artist Statement

My creative process starts with materials, both traditional and unexpected. Observing the effects and results of various techniques using those materials leads to subject matter. My current series of paintings is inspired by my travels to Southeast Asia and, specifically, Luang Prabang, Laos, where centuries old Buddhist temples are adorn with spectacularly bright frescos. My work seeks to recreate their ethereal reverence by exploring the architecture of color, materials and texture.

My encaustic work employs a healthy dose of experimentation and playfulness, applying wax and water-based media, wiping, scraping, burning and applying pigment in powder form. The fill-on flatness of the work is disrupted through texture and a chaotic, sometimes furious, application of color, which allows my to express myself both in the process and the finished work.

I have studied encaustic painting and printmaking at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA, the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, WA and Northwest Encaustic in Seattle, WA. I am a co-owner of the Nichols Berg Gallery and Studio in Chestnut Hill, where I teach workshops in encaustic painting and printmaking.
