Artist Bio

For well over a decade, I have been working as a professional visual artist. Born in Los Angeles, California, I currently live and work in Southern New Jersey. My work has moved progressively from a search into the urban landscape and the city to the spaces where the city meets nature at public parks and then to explorations of more wild natural environments that serve as settings for figures. I explore identity and place and the complexities of one’s relationship with the self and with others. I continue to examine how gender, race, sexuality, and power figure into people’s experiences within the physical and social geographies of the city and nature. I am interested in creating narratives of love and loss, fulfillment and emptiness, shadow and light, often with figures caught in emotional ambivalence. I work in photography, mixed media, collage, and painting and I value the diversity of my art practice as I work conceptually with the medium that is appropriate for my ideas.

I graduated with an MFA in Studio Art in 2003 from the University of California, Irvine. I have exhibited my work extensively at the local, national, and international levels and I had a solo exhibition of my photography and collages at the Kunstraum Arcade Gallery in Moedling, Austria in Spring 2011. My work has been on view at the DePaul University Museum in the show “Double Exposure: African Americans Before and Behind the Camera,” which has traveled across the United States. The galleries and museums that have shown my work include the Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco, CA; Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles, CA; the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, CA; the University of Detroit Mercy, Detroit, MI; the Noyes Museum of Art, Oceanville, NJ; Allens Lane Art Center, Philadelphia, PA; and the Asian Arts Initiative, Philadelphia, PA. I was a 2011 Artist in Residence at AIR Krems in Krems, Austria. I am also a 2009 recipient of the “Visions From the New California” award, which granted me a residency at Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Northern California. My series Elements of Love was recently on view as part of a two person exhibition with photographer Hannah Price at Richard Stockton College, Pomona, NJ.
