Artist Bio

Pat S. Robertson is a printmaker and book artist. She received her MFA from Tyler School of Art. She has been a resident at the Vermont Studio Center and at Penland School of Arts & Crafts. She has traveled to Los Angeles as a visiting artist at SelfHelp Graphics. She has exhibited in Wilmington, Baltilmore, Kansas City, Birmingham as well as here in Philadelphia

Artist Statement

These images are part of a long continuous series I have entitled The Garden of Earthly Delights. All derived from my observations of people and events. Through quiet observation of situations around me I gather information with which to create these images. These are glimpses of my view of the world in which I live. Each image is an interpretation of an immediate reaction to a situation. A situation observed from a distance or one in which I was a participant. These events and people are presented as a signature or note in an atmosphere of mood and color. The lines and colors flow around, in, and out of the figures setting the tone, the pace and emotional state of the event depicted. Events are condensed or expanded and formal elements of leaves and blossoms are added as layers. The plant forms are collected photographically on everyday walks around the city. I create silhouettes and line drawings from these photographs to use in the paintings and prints. These silhouettes function as formal devices serve to place the image in a particular time (season) or emotional state. The moods of these pieces are varied. The events are depicted in an unclear and cryptic manner as they have been abstracted from my memory. These are images of my memory and my attempt at understanding this world and life.
