Artist Bio

Caroline Elizabeth Savage, born in Ismailia, Egypt, makes photographic and cinematic work. She has a BA in Art History from SUNY Binghamton, a BFA in Photography and MFA in Film from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has worked as a Program Director at the PA Council on the Arts, faculty at Dickinson College, SFAI, Temple University and is currently teaching Strategic Planning in the Theatre Arts Management online graduate program at Rowan University. In 2006, she was awarded a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship in Media Arts.

She lived in Karachi, Pakistan; London, England; and San Francisco and Pacifica, California. She traveled by train, car ship and foot across landscapes, terrains always in flux, our geography. This shaped her interests in noticing and experiencing the ever moving, changing landscapes as a voyeur and flaneur of the transitory world. The camera became her artistic tool. Moving from the precision of photographers Ansel Adams and Minor White, the romance of Imogen Cunningham to the experimentation of filmmakers Marie Menken, Hollis Frampton and Malcolm Le Grice, she honed her craft at the San Francisco Art Institute, immersed in possibilities of painting with light, time and motion. Musicians John Cage and Steve Reich introduced her to chance, strategy and synchronicity to discover and reveal the harmonic patterns in nature.

She makes landscapes that are based on formal associations of interconnected moving light, line, and color which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned. By applying abstraction allowing the camera to record light and movement, she investigates the dynamics of landscape. Rather than presenting a factual reality, Savage creates new sequences which reveal an inseparable relationship between motion, light and space. By questioning the concept of movement, she formalizes the coincidental and emphasizes the conscious process of composition.

She continually makes works inspired by Robert Irwin’s simple directive to artists: “There is still wonder out there.”
