Artist Statement

These images reflect a history. Things have been built and events have occurred in these places but now the abandoned structures are the only sign of human presence. My landscapes are about time and change, and are symbolic of conflict. I feel an uncomfortable sense of mystery even though I created these pictures. At the same time I am interested in form and space, not as in academic realism, but not abstraction either. There is a healthy respect for craft and tradition. Mark making and technique are intertwined inseparably with imagery, and the two have evolved together in my work.

My interest in form extends to a fascination with insects. It started with a series of images from nature. As I studied and started drawing these forms I was surprised by the structure as well as the variety of colors, textures, patterns and forms in insects. There is a long history of artists, including many contemporary artists, who derive their imagery from insects. I became especially interested in beetles. They were beautiful but because of their size and appearance made me a little uneasy. I didn’t want to hold a preserved specimen. It was interesting to me how beauty and ugliness could co-exist in these creatures.
