I have always been interested in digging deeply to explore mystery, whether it is penetrating layers of space, geography, or the human psyche. This exploration leads me to experiment with color, mixed media and layering, or scratching away at layers. In addition to brushes, I use whatever tools I can find to create a visual language that best conveys my thoughts and feelings.
For many years my connection to the earth and how we are destroying the environment has been on my mind. I have been painting about our Climate Reality for a while, in a series on rising waters, lost ice and lost trees — all desecrations of our beautiful planet, our home.
Meaningful history and events also influence my art. I have made a number of paintings in a series called “You Are Not Forgotten”. Some reference the struggles of Tibetans to retain their culture. Others reference the holocaust and famous painters.
I also create 3-dimensional, mixed media shadow boxes. These started as an outlet for humor and whimsy and putting a stop to “fixing things”. I use broken, found, and repurposed objects to create something new. I call many of them “song boxes” because of the use of antique sheet music.
The beautiful thing about making art is that not only does it give the artist meaning and purpose, it moves the viewer too (hopefully), and enriches the lives and souls of those who view it.
