Artists Statement

Every painting starts with a grid. The vertical and horizontal lines calm my active brain and provide a structure on which to work.

I often paint within the cells of the grid before tying everything together. Because I use encaustic, I work slowly and deliberately. Building up sticky, fragrant layers of wax forces me to be present. This meditative process is as important as the end result.

Autobiographical stories on paper are encased inside the waxy pigment. The layers of narrative and paint parallel the layers of energy from daily life. Abstract shapes, patterns, and vivid color recall cherished memories of my native Argentina.

Artist Bio

Dora was born in Buenos Aires and raised in a family of accomplished musicians and visual artists. Her formal training started at a young age when her aunt — a well-known Argentinean painter — taught her to paint in oils. Though interrupted by family moves to Missouri and Philadelphia, Dora continued her training and entered the Instituto de Bellas Artes Beato Angelico in Buenos Aires, where she received her degree in fine arts and art education. After graduation, Dora returned to Philadelphia to teach art to grade-school children. The innocence, freshness, and unique quality of children’s art inspires her to this day.

Dora now lives in Center City Philadelphia with her partner of 20 years.
Her son Jonathan is her hero. You might be wondering why? He is doing what she wished she would have done back in her 20’s but didn’t have the guts to do. Watching how Jonathan is doing gave her the courage to do it. He is following his dream.

Since 2009, Dora has been able to devote herself to being a full-time artist. To that end, she consistently seeks exhibition opportunities while enhancing her studio practice and knowledge of the art business.

During the summers, Dora co-owns Fun in the Sun summer camp for kids, where she has served as owner-administrator since 1991.
