Artist Statement

While studying design in my native Chile in the 1970s, I became interested in pre-Columbian art, especially in the rock art done in my own country. I was encouraged to do further research by Hans Niemeyer, a renowned archeologist.

My work—be it in textile and graphic art or painting—springs from this research and exploration, and concerns my connection to an ancient past.

In addition to painting, I work together with my husband on surface and textile designs intended for women’s apparel and home fashion. I use pre-Columbian motifs reinterpreted in a contemporary way, as well as stylized florals, abstracts, ethnics, and organic shapes, among others. For some designs, I borrow ideas from my paintings, but quite unexpectedly, the designs themselves give rise to new paintings that explore my long-term concerns. I recognize that even though my medium changes, I am still entranced by the core idea of my work–human connectedness in a cosmic environment.
