Deadline March 18: Throughout history, art has depicted the observable, natural, scientific world, as well as the ecstatic mysteries of religion, mythology, and folklore. These two seemingly disparate means of experiencing reality have often been at odds, especially as the slow forward march of scientific progress threatens the structures of power built by religious institutions. One such intellectual and ideological struggle centers around our very beginnings: the birth of the universe, abiogenesis, and evolutionary biology versus the mythology of creation.
The gallery at New Boone (253 N. 3rd Street) seeks artists working in any medium to submit work to be exhibited from May 6-8, 2016. Press Start will explore and contextualize the intersection of scientific theories regarding the origin of Us and creation mythologies (from any culture or religion) in contemporary art, and whether or not artists are able or willing to reconcile these schools of thought.
