Artist's Biography

Mehgan Rose Abdel-Mondeim is a dance, performance and visual artist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Political Studies from Bard College, where she also studied dance technique and composition. While at Bard, she conducted qualitative research on the census and Middle Eastern and North African identity.

Mehgan has performed for Sheila Zagar, Rosy Simas Danse, Allison Pearce, and David Gordon, among others. She has presented original performance pieces at The Secret City Art Revival, EDANCO 2019, and KYL/D's 2020 InHale Performance Series. Most recently, Mehgan performed for David Gordon's new work The Philadelphia Matter 1972/2020, which premiered as part of Philly Fringe Festival.

Though usually a dancer and performer, Mehgan began experimenting with found object sculpture and visual art when the pandemic led us into isolation. Since then, she has participated in group shows at HOT∙BED and InLiquid, and taken to building ideas out of trash and bartered items. Mehgan currently works as a freelance artist, a Youth Teaching Assistant at Asian Arts Initiative, and a very part-time administrative assistant at the University of the Arts.

Artist's Statement

I make work with what I have. I have conflicts and questions and objects and relationships and a body. Performing is my practice of finding power, a method to metabolize my environment and desires. With dance, sculpture, paint and farce, I take what I have and try to turn it into something else, something absurd and/or beautiful and/or impossible. I often construct imaginary characters and fantasies that allow real concerns to bloom into something ridiculous, and I invite viewers to laugh or take what they will. By binding anxieties, wonders and frustrations to physical structures and characters, I get closer to digesting questions about identity and power.
