Artist's Statement
Speaking to my experience as the product of artificial donor insemination and the daughter of a queer woman, my work seeks to embody feelings of displacement and existential dependency.
The work explores a dynamic between a queer mother and daughter where the struggle for autonomy feels both necessary for survival as well as a threat to each others identities and existence.
I internalized a sense of dropping into my life experience with no historical or contextual familial ties, due to the anonymity of my paternal makeup, as well as the unconventional, makeshift nature of my mothers queer lifestyle. Seemingly untethered to a familial history or lineage that preceded me, my mother appeared to be the one person solely responsible for and my identity and existence.
With these experiences driving me, I play with the scale, tension, and levity of papier-mâché figurative sculptures to illustrate the struggle between autonomy and dependance within the relationship of a queer mother and child.
