Rosalind Bloom

Artist's Biography

Rosalind Bloom is a founding member of Assemblage Artists Collective, the region’s oldest informal artist collective, and as such, was recently interviewed by both WHYY and WDDE. She has been exhibiting independently since graduating from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1985. Born and raised in NYC, she attended what was then the High School of Music and Art. After moving to the Philadelphia area with an MA in Art History from Columbia University she taught that subject at Rosemont College and Villanova University, eventually giving up the classroom for the studio. She has been an artist in residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and at the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming. Her work is on the cover of Contemporary Poets, from Chelsea House Press, is included in Quotable Women, published by Running Press of Philadelphia, and has been published in Philadelphia Stories magazine. She is currently an active member of the Women’s Caucus for Art and the Da Vinci Art Alliance.

Artist's Statement

Collaged elements, many cut out of older abstract paintings, mutate or evolve into fictional beings, vaguely animal, bird, insect, or human. These creatures interact with one another visually and emotionally across the spaces between them, reminding us of how we too relate to one another, our fellow creatures, and the world at large. The settings in which these "conversations" occur reflect a response to, and a concern for, the natural environment. In addition to collage, transfer print techniques also play a major role in my work. Art is all about transformation and it's the process that gets us there. Where that turns out to be is often a surprise.
