Staggered Paths

The DIY Machine User Guide takes viewers through the building process of impossible electrical DIY machines. Using copper wire and an assortment of trash, these devices conjure imaginings. This examination of objects in a state of disuse explores the disembodied femme voice and analyzes YouTube How To Guides by utilizing the language of ASMR and new age conspiracies. This work questions function and misuse. It fortifies these broken objects and tenderly identifies with them, granting new potential.

Inspired by at home workout YouTube this video explores fixation on numbered time, fitness, disembodied voice, and YouTube culture.

Artist's Statement

There is no such thing as telepathy, or a perfect way to articulate the nuanced experience of one's life, yet the desire to try is overwhelming. I am mesmerized by communication and the tools that make communications possible. I am particularly interested in the moments where connection fails; when there is a typo/auto correction in a text message or a frozen picture of a loved one on a Zoom call. These are moments when the distances, both cognitive and physical become exaggerated. Seeing failure exposes the logic of devices used to generate conversation.

I have a particular interest in the transmission of voice, often performing femme characters like Siri, Alexa, a robocaller, a YouTuber, or a call waiting line. Assuming the playful affect of a prank caller allows me to infiltrate networks and challenge them. It is a speculative moment where new narratives and modes of connection are articulated. In my practice I examine the banal possibilities waiting to be gleaned from everyday discarded objects asking, what can be generated from waste? What can be learned from items like an apple core, a crumpled up note, or a dead battery? And what can we discover within radio static, a hold line, and video feedback?
