Artist's Biography
Pia De Girolamo is an accomplished painter living and working in the Greater Philadelphia area whose recent exhibitions featured large-scale paintings based on abstracted mountain landscapes, as well as a series evoking the urban landscapes of Rome and Italy. She has had thirteen solo exhibitions, most currently at the Cerulean Arts Gallery in Philadelphia, and at the Museo Mastroianni, within the Musei di San Salvatore in Lauro in Rome. She has also shown extensively in group exhibitions regionally. De Girolamo has a BA in Art History from Barnard College, Columbia University and an MD degree from the University of Rochester. She lectures on the relationship between art and medicine as well as the connections between art, nature, and health. Her awarded work has been acquired for collections by PNC Bank and Thomas Jefferson University and has been highlighted in Hollywood feature films.
Artist's Statement
I am primarily a painter of modernist landscapes who uses interacting forms and color combinations in an abstract and intuitive way to convey the essence of place. In my Mountain Series, massive organic forms, expansiveness and the sense of gravity dictated how I used color and shape. In my most recent exhibit, Being There, a series of large and small scale paintings begun during an extended stay in Rome, a variety of geometric shapes, including apartment blocks, triangular roofs, and domes interact with each other and with natural forms like the iconic umbrella pines and cypresses of the Mediterranean. I am currently at work on a new series featuring the fragile and otherworldly landscape of the Arctic.
