    Artist's Biography

Adam Erlbaum received a BA in Mathematics from The Colorado College in 2002. He then enrolled in non-degree classes at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Erlbaum's experience there assured him that he could apply his mathematical sensibility to painting. He began work at the Philadelphia's I Brewster Gallery while studying abstract painting at the nearby University of the Arts. Abstract painting became Erlbaum's chosen form. He showed his first group of abstracts at I Brewster. Erlbaum continued to pursue abstraction at the Main Line Art Center in suburban Philadelphia. He attended the MFA in Visual Arts program at The Vermont College of Fine Arts, during which he was invited to participate in an exhibition at The Artist's House Gallery in Philadelphia's Old City neighborhood. Always looking for diverse perspective on his work, he returned to The Wayne Arts Center in suburban Philadelphia. Erlbaum rented space at The Mill Artist Studios in Philadelphia's Manayunk neighborhood, where he paints today.

    Artist's Statement

I limit materials. Three color values, no mixing. Often only one brush. I work with heavy-duty canvas on heavy-duty stretchers, and a heavy-duty aluminum easel. Although I only work with the canvas clamped to the easel in the traditional manner, I frequently move the canvas between the clamp and the floor. Clamping the painting signals 'Paint.' Moving it to the floor signals 'Stop Painting.'

I completely erase most canvases multiple times, leaving an even wash of an arbitrary color. I make evolving series (plural) of marks. The mark-making becomes affirmative when I am approaching the solution to a given painting. The physical and mental planes align. The painting is a record of this experience.
