Painter Erica Harney (b. New York, 1984) holds a BFA from Alfred University, Magna Cum Laude and an MFA from the Pennsylvania State University. She has also studied at the Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy.

Harney has exhibited extensively across the US and internationally. Significant solo and group exhibitions have taken place at Cecil College in Elkton, MD; the Pennsylvania State University; Penn State Harrisburg; Red Raven Art Company in Lancaster, PA; Estate Yard Gallery in Castlecomer, Ireland; SELECT Fair at Art Basel Miami Beach; GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading, PA; the Crane Arts Center and Lacey & Phillips Gallery in Philadelphia; and several New York City galleries such as Greenpoint Gallery, Sara Meltzer and Coleman Burke.

She is currently preparing for upcoming solo exhibitions at The Pennsylvania State University (2017) and Manhattanville College (2018) and is also curating a group exhibition for Iona College in New Rochelle, NY which will open in August of this year.

Erica Harney is the recipient of numerous awards including a Graham Endowed Fellowship, a Daniel J. Murphy II Award for Creativity, a Christos N. Apostle Grant and a microgrant from Blick Art Supplies. She has been featured in several publications including KA Confidential, Studio Visit Magazine, Southern Humanities Review and TriQuarterly, and she illustrated the cover of Smoking Cigarettes, Eating Glass: A Psychologist’s Memoir by Annita Sawyer. Harney has been a resident artist at ArtScape in Toronto, Weir Farm in Connecticut, the Palazzo Rinaldi in Italy, and the Vermont Studio Center.

The artist has worked collaboratively with visual artists, musicians, writers, and choreographers. She has also worked with the world-renowned Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia: most recently on a mile-long street mural for the 2016 Democratic National Convention. She has taught at the Pennsylvania State University and the New York State Summer School of the Arts as well as various workshops, lectures and community education classes across the Mid-Atlantic region. Harney has also curated and organized group exhibitions at Iona College, Alfred University and Penn State, as well as the Independent Rock School and the Biddle Building, both in Philadelphia.

Since 2012, Harney has worked professionally as a scenic painter for Philadelphia-area theatre and production companies including Opera Philadelphia, Opera Delaware and the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster, PA.

Artist's Statement

Shaping one's own reality, is in fact, a creative act. And living in a world one has created can be as enjoyable as writing a symphony. Imagine, revise, revive, validate, remember, forget, seek refuge, seek certainty. It is the ongoing search for truth amid illusion. It is creating an elephant from a lump of stone - both difficult, and endlessly meaningful. –Amy Weishaar

***

Residing in the interstices of realism and abstraction, my work is about the act of creating “selective” realities. These can be literal- like the exquisitely intentional fabrications of staged theatre; or existential- the self-images we craft in an effort to help us perceive and be perceived by others. Exploiting the deceptive nature of paint, I allow remnants of the physical and intellectual process to emphasize that the image is an artifice: deliberately constructed, edited, and presented in such a way as to become its own entity.

My most recent work is directly affected by my experiences working as a scenic artist, painting sets and backdrops for operas, plays and musicals, where every element of the set has been carefully and deliberately chosen to express a mood, idea or ambience. Even the word “play” has a significant double meaning, as playfulness and whimsy propel my work, allowing each individual piece to take on its own aesthetic and identity- each one completely different from the one before.
