Printmaking/Mixed Media

Artist's Statement

My inspiration comes from the city. The city provides a wealth of shapes, textures, patterns both naturally occurring and manmade; its architectural, its growth and progress, and natural accumulation. I enjoy flattening these structures and forms into silhouettes; stacking and building shapes of color into urban scenes that take on multiple points of view, or more than one time and place.

I find that color and pattern are crucial elements in creating space that one can fully immerse and escape into. My goal is often to create a space that can push and pull between vastness and flatness is achieved by using blocks and layers of color. Bold overarching patterns suggest or disintegrate scale while color suggests distance and separate spaces.

I find the challenges involved in printmaking often push my drawing to develop more interesting spatial relationships, textures, and rhythms. The texture of the wood comes through and plays a significant role in creating a heart beat in each print, something natural, soft, and subtle.
