In their 8 year-spanning practice, Jamin (also more commonly referred to as ‘JaySquid’ ) has explored surrealism and sifiesque qualities through different materials and mediums. Self-taught, Jamin began painting as a means to express themselves during their later years in college. This hobby turned passion, became a more tangible career as Jamin started to receive accolades from the creative community of Greensboro, North Carolina.
With the notion of “You can create anything once you see it in your mind.” Jamin has accumulated numerous successful exhibitions, events, murals, and collaborations. Their work is influenced by dreams, death, love, sex, androgyny, mind bending concepts all wrapped in futuristic Afrocentric qualities.
Jamin has gained most of their experience through practical experience, learning through trial and error, and self-learning studying the craft through any available avenue.
I believe that telling our stores first to ourselves and then to one another and then the world is a revolutionary act. My paintings are the physical manifestations of my emotional responses to the life I have been given.
In my art, Black bodies are centered and adorned with humanity and elements that may not be of this world. Afrosurrealism is the provenance of my inspiration. A notion that seeks to cultivate alternative and expanded ways of knowing and being for myself asa black person. My work is an expression of black people being able to imagine themselves in the future in a more liberated and free way.
