Artist's Biography

Sebastien Leclercq is a multi-disciplinary artist working in drawing, photography and sculpture. He received a BFA in painting from the University of Washington and an MFA in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art. His work considers the connection between the human system, spirit and the world it simultaneously reflects and creates. He lives and works in Philadelphia, PA. He has exhibited in New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Finland.

Artist's Statement

I am preoccupied with that uncharted space which seems to exist between what we see and what we know.

I am fascinated by the subtle ways our literal and figurative position to something can determine how we perceive and engage with it.

I investigate this preoccupation mainly through drawings and works on paper that subtly subvert presumably factual things like graph-paper and lined loose-leaf paper with imbedded semi-narratives, autobiographical elements, aberrations in scale or systems that generate unique multiples.

One of my fundamental concerns is to invite a questioning gaze because if it is our gaze that defines how we engage with and participate in shaping the world, it stands to reason that the depth of our participation is also shaped by what we perceive to be the parameters of our engagement. In my work I endeavor to affirm the significance of activating the fluidity of these parameters.
