Artist's Biography

Enzhao Liu is an artist from Dalian, China, now working in Philadelphia, PA. Liu is a member of Philadelphia/Tri State Artists Equity. Liu graduated from the top art school Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, with both the BFA and MFA degrees, which built up Liu’s eastern culture background. After graduation Liu went to Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where Liu learned the western culture and contemporary art. Combining both the east and west, Liu creates a surreal world in his own mind. Liu’s painting was shown at Art Basel HK, LA Art Show, Seattle Art Fair and Liu just did his solo show at the Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon, PA. Liu’s work is in the collection of CAFA Art Museum in Beijing and Ningbo Art Museum, China. Let’s expect Liu’s public project at the Philadelphia International Airport in the spring of 2019!

Article

"Enzhao Liu is one of the most exciting young artists I have encountered. His work has enormous range, both in scale and materiality. Large paintings encompass shifts in scope – from the solar system, down to close examination of the tiniest creatures. Meticulous attention to surface, wild inventiveness of patterning, and unexpected color harmonies are all at play. Smaller, quicker works on paper, demonstrate the skillful economy of which he is also capable.

The Christmas tree in my apartment seems a useful metaphor to contemplate the paintings of Enzhao Liu. An evergreen, now cut from its roots, has been transported far from where it started life – kept in suspended animation by artificial means. The birds that once perched on its branches have been replaced by bejeweled doppelgänger. Stars from distant galaxies have been pulled close in the form of twinkling light strings.

Like my Christmas tree, Liu’s paintings present a natural world transformed by artifice and the touch of a human hand. Every mark is evidence of loving fascination and wonder – attempting to convey the
wonder of life (and painting) in all its varied forms.

The paintings construct a rich, complex world – attempting to condense vast expanses of time and space into a cosmos of their own. They reach for the far depths of the universe and to the depths of the oceans – and also the virtual world and the space of the internet. World and Art histories combine with mythical origin stories – all existing simultaneously on the same (picture) plane. Spatially compressed, the paintings sing with the language of pattern and color. All are recognizable as being by the same hand, but a hand that is capable of myriad effects. One senses a
profound joy in the materiality of pigment on surface and the restless search for ever more transmutations. The work of Enzhao Liu invites us on a journey of the imagination - and to explore the wonders of external
and internal worlds."
