Artist's Biography

Sandi Neiman Lovitz graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelors degree in Art Education and taught art in the Pittsburgh public school system for two years. She attended summer art classes at Carnegie Tech and was a juried member of the Pittsburgh watercolor society before moving to Philadelphia.

Sandi continued to teach private classes and exhibit her paintings. Her passion for art led to various businesses that all involved the creative process. Plastic Fantastics was started with a friend, where they designed and manufactured acrylic functional art pieces. This, combined with her desire to keep doing art to make a living, resulted in her decision to learn sign painting as a trade. She did freestyle hand lettering on windows, tractor trailers, paper and wood for approximately 10 years. Following that, she developed a line of hand-painted clothing that was sold throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan area, did murals in personal and commercial areas, and also created a line of hand-painted furniture which was represented by several galleries in the area. During this whole time, Sandi continued to exhibit her paintings in various shows and was part of the Merrill Collection, a gallery in West Chester, PA.

She was President of the Tri-State Pennsylvania Artists Equity for two years and has continued to serve on the executive board. She is also involved in ARTsisters, a group of women who are professional visual artists that not only support each other, but also reach out to women and children in the community. Sandi was a juror in the Centennial exhibition at the Delaware Art Museum by John B. Ravenal and curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She was also a juror in the Berks Art Alliance at the Reading Art Museum and was awarded a honorable mention by Lisa Tremper Hanover, CEO of the Michener Museum. She participated in the Square Foot Art Basel Miami, was awarded the Nolan Painting Award at the Main Line Art Center in Haverford, PA, by celebrated artist Moe Brooker, and was awarded featured artist on Artsy Shark, founded by Carolyn Edlund, Executive Director of the Arts Business Institute. Sandi is a faculty member at the Main Line Art Center in Haverford, PA and paints full-time in her studio.

Artist's Statement

The simple definition of color: "the quality of an object or substance with respect to light reflected by the object"…The miracle of which we see every day around us. I paint colors. That is my subject matter. My inspiration is everything upbeat around me. My new body of work involves pouring paint on canvas in layers, manipulating those pours with various tools, including my fingers, and allowing the pours to run off of the canvas and remain as part of the total composition. I cross that boundary of the canvas which allows for a kaleidoscopic and sculptural effect with the paint and mediums. I continue to explore the dance between paint and process by using experimental methods of application that demand spontaneity in gesture and thought, while maintaining an informed reason for every action that is taken.
