Artist's Statement

To explain my artwork and its role in this world, I’ll explain my artist name. Hiero Maar is the equal and opposite reaction to the world around me. Hiero comes from the last place Christopher Columbus and his crew were before they set sail for America, a small island called El Hierro. El Hierro represents the last moment before a paradigm shift that has led to a more hive-minded world. Hiero Maar is the call for the individual to create, control and interject their unique vision into the world around them. My first and foremost artistic inspiration was Picasso. My brother is named after him, we had a large print of “Girl before a Mirror” in my childhood home, and I have his signature tattooed on my chest. I took the name Maar from his muse Dora Maar to note my own inspirations. I’m looking to inspire the next generation to be confident in expressions of originality.
