    Artist's Biography

Jennifer Manzella is an artist and a printmaker who works mainly with relief and etching processes. In her large reduction block series she explores the complex relationship between color and landscape inspired by traditional Japanese Ukiyo- e prints. In a recent woodblock print series she depicts hybrid dwellings that are meant to tap into a nostalgic sense of being mobile or immobile. She has been an art educator for ten years and received an MFA in printmaking at The University of Georgia in Athens, GA. Jennifer’s prints have been in numerous juried national and international exhibitions including two juried exhibitions at the International Print Center in New York City. Having relocated back to Philadelphia last summer, she lived in Athens, GA for twelve years where she taught as a full time lecturer for the University of North Georgia. Jennifer currently lives in South Philly and teaches printmaking at Arcadia University in Glenside, PA.

    Artist's Statement

My images are inspired by the places I’ve lived, the places I visit, the places I have traveled to and the places I romanticize. I sometimes think of “place” as an emotional state rather than a geographic location; our associations and experience with certain places can trigger both nostalgia and wanderlust. Recalling urban and natural settings, I strive to visualize a manifestation of these places combining remnants of reality, memory, and dream.

Working mainly in print media, drawing and collage, I create artwork that recalls images of landscape often tied in with the idea of place, home and shelter. These images are often constructions from actual places in my past travels as well as found images that have been transformed through various drawing and printmaking processes.
