Artist's Statement

Elisabeth Nickles is a mixed media artist living in Philadelphia. She received her Masters degree in sculpture from Alfred University. She completed undergraduate studies at the Museum School in Boston and The Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia. In the past year, she has completed a large-scale commission for the SEPTA Arts in Transit program as well as for the offices of The Reinvestment Fund in Philadelphia. Recently Elisabeth’s work using paper has been on view at the Philadelphia International Airport. Elisabeth has completed bodies of work in bronze, glass and paper and has been included in several national exhibitions.

The relationship of humans to themselves, to nature and to one another is paramount to my artistic output. I construct loose narratives within the physical realm of organic form. Issues of the human psyche are seen in relationship to nature and as a fragment of nature. The mind and body are moving parts of the larger system of biological cycle and subconscious knowledge. My depiction of natural form is my mental projection and physical association with the non-human world. With humor and fascination I bring my obsessions, memories and identity to landscape. The forms I create embody struggles with each other but also the internal struggles of the self and our place in the larger relationships of the environment and the cycles that exist in nature.
