Artist's Statement

I am interested in how people inhabit public spaces. Where do people pause? Where do crowds form? What happens when people alter the intended use of the space? How does use over time leave traces? In worn stairs or cracked pavement we can read both the gradual breakdown of the built environment and also the movement of people that keeps a city vibrant.

Many of these works come from a series titled Translated Cities, which I developed over the course of five years traveling between the United States and China. I am interested in how the public space of the street is shaped by the changing built environment and social interactions. I am also working on a new series about family, illness, and identity.
