Michael Trinsey

Artist's Statement

An outdoor walk in nature, down a street in an unfamiliar place or internet surfing on Flickr, Tumblr and Instagram: this is what inspires me. Snapping a photo with my smartphone, I create an electronic sketchbook of images, which leads to a wealth of stored ideas that soon become my art. My paintings are the electronic merger of many pictures and ideas, composed and simplified as a trained designer, painted onto board to form my final painting.

Steadily transforming from an experienced commercial Art Director to a fine artist. As a graphic designer and illustrator, I brainstorm ideas for business purposes. While researching concepts for the design field, I visualize many of these ideas as fine art paintings and begin to sketch. Then, I transform my sketches into uniform, planed colors, simplified, creating a series of shapes that make up my final concept. Using flat acrylic paint, I use frisket and tape, and paint in the cutout areas giving my painting a hard, edgy graphic feel. You will see that my experience as a designer permeates my concepts. I create a stylistic realism that changes the essence of the original photo that I refine and make my own.
