I love Movement and Gesture - using them in the dance of creating, and aiming to depict them fully in my abstract paintings. Discovering ways to depict movement in a still medium like painting on canvas is endlessly exciting to me. I view my creative process as a performance - choreographing my movements, so that the result may speak differently to each individual, but it remains a story my Body tells; unique to me and my experience. I am interested in movement and texture, liberating himself in his improvised, impulse-driven creative process.
Painting speaks to me as a performer so much because it is as old as us, as humanity. It is evidence that at some point in the history of the Universe, a living being took up space, and created energy to paint - this is a sold as cave paintings, as old as human creativity; to be a painter and thus connected to the oldest artistic traditions and desires we know, is something that brings me a lot of joy in my work.
Rohaan Unvala is a painter, mixed-media artist, performer, deviser, and filmmaker, born and raised in the hustle and bustle of Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India. He currently lives and creates all-original artwork in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is currently a graduate student in the MFA Devised Performance Program at The Pig Iron Theatre Company / The University of the Arts. Though a performer and theatre deviser at heart, he has a love for creating abstract, fantastical, textured paintings on canvas. Art, to him, poses the most important questions about our Universe and also helps us answer them.
