Artist's Biography

Carol was born in Brooklyn, NY and then lived on Long Island during the famed 1960s flight to the suburbs. Her early city life included an Irish-Catholic upbringing and frequent childhood visits to the neighboring Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

After completing an undergraduate degree in Psychology Carol went on to study painting at the University of the Arts under painters Doris Staffel and Larry Day. Carol’s early paintings composed of symbolic “personages” continue to be present in her recent sculptures.

Wisker’s Education graduate degree project marked the beginning of her thinking about education for all adults in art schools and museums regardless of aging or disability. Carol became one of the leaders in the “museum accessibility” field and traveled through out the country speaking and training museum professionals. Her teaching also took her as far away as Japan. Carol’s long-term employment at the Philadelphia Museum of Art offered constant access to her own continuing education in Asian, Japanese and African cultures and in Contemporary Art.

Carol is married to photographer Howard Brunner and is mom and step-mom to three more creative’s who are employed in the gaming industry, teach special populations and make poetry and music.

Artist's Statement

As a painter and sculptor I work abstractly creating with my hands, mind and spirit in the space of the unknown. I trust what is not there to create that which has never been seen. I am fortunate to have been able to hone and trust in this process throughout my creative life.

My working life was devoted to the care and betterment of others lives. Even after retirement my artwork is still directed by humanistic concerns about the environment, feminism, immigration, gun control all deeply felt political positions.

My sculptural creations combine fiber and textiles with mannequins, furniture and other found objects. The surfaces of the sculptures are made from thousands of individual medallions of raw natural cotton a labor-intensive process that requires help from my studio assistant. . The medallions are cut from cording that is typically used to line the interiors of domestic objects repurposed to create the soft, dense “skins” of objects analogous to the surface of the body or to surfaces in nature. This surface is my canvas.

Some of my loves are the paintings of Phillip Guston, the soft sculptures of surrealist Dorothea Tanning, and the rubber sculptures of Chakaia Booker. I am also fascinated by the fantasy in the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch.
