“While Sherald’s portrait of Michelle Obama fashionably winks at visitors to the National Portrait Gallery, her Mural Arts work potentially has greater impact.” —Philadelphia Inquirer
It’s true: the massive, forty-foot high new mural at 11th and Sansom Streets in Center City is a portrait of a young Philadelphian by renowned painter Amy Sherald.
The model for Untitled is Najee Spencer-Young, a teen from North Philly who met Sherald through Mural Arts’ Art Education program. “I saw it as an opportunity to build her self-esteem as well as [that of] the other young girls that look like her,” said Sherald, whose portraits show the beauty and power in ordinary moments in the life of Black people.
Join Mural Arts June 20 to dedicate this new six-story-high mural portrait by Amy Sherald that explores identity and the public gaze. This event is open to the public.
