Sketches from the South of Spain

Santa Fe artist, June Julian, will present a slide show of her original watercolors that she painted on location in the small hill towns of Andalucia, Spain. Traveling there for many summers during her breaks from teaching during the academic year, she compiled a visual record of the sights and scenes of the Cadiz area in her numerous sketchbooks. Many of these she later developed into oil paintings on canvas. Passionately interested in Spanish art and culture, she studied at Ballet Hispanico in New York for many years. Her many Flamenco paintings were also inspired by experiencing the iconic Feria de Sevilla and by its historic illustrated posters.

The oil paintings and watercolours by June Julian communicate something new and suggestive when depicting the urbanscapes of Moorish looking villages of the Andalucian Sierras. That magic which ultimately is Art, transforms our common everyday experience into joyous or passionate contemplation.
