Participants learn to articulate a vocabulary for composition by analyzing an array of ideas from luminaries on the subject. Students then study static and dynamic applications of balance, the use of visual perception, abstract design, cropping, tonal/value massing within a set rectangular space as well as how to capitalize on the existing proportional harmonies within specific rectangles. Exercises put varying ideas to the test, from early 19-century “laws” to contemporary strategies.
