Edward Bradley is an outsider whose work has been influenced both by his career in biomedical research, looking at nature at the microscopic and molecular level , and by his strong roots in mid-century minimalism. His thick, almost sculptural surfaces, use of rough and natural media such as plaster, wood, string, and fabric, and subdued color palettes are characteristic of many of his works. As if looking through a microscope at ” low power” – a quick glance at a work across a room, for example, – we see a highly ordered image composed of many seemingly identical components. But under ” higher magnification” the uniqueness of each element, their variation and frequent structural aberrancy emerge. The depth of the work’s surface invites the viewer to look at what is hidden beneath, just out of the viewer’s focal plane. Sometimes written text alluding to a place or event, or a fragment from literature, is inserted into the work to provide an emotional context for it. A quantal perception of all of ” what is” – light, space, time, grace – grounds most of the work presented here.
