The Delaware Contemporary presents: Foreign Bodies, works by Vesna Jovanovic.

These drawings – collectively titled Foreign Bodies – reference medical illustration while depicting various objects that may or may not commonly be thought of as part of the human body. The series is driven by the question: what is the difference between a foreign body and a familiar body? The drawings focus on this ontological threshold through a combination of randomly spilled ink and intricate cross-hatching on 80” scrolls of Yupo. Each piece shows the result of various musings regarding what might enter the body surgically, accidentally, deliberately, violently, and aesthetically.

Vesna Jovanovic is a Chicago-based visual artist who specializes in conceptualizations of the human body. She is a recipient of numerous grants and awards, and her work has been featured in over one hundred exhibitions to date. Images of her work have appeared in various publications such as Science News; Time Out Chicago; and Newcity; and on numerous blogs including Discover Magazine; New American Paintings; and Art:21. She just completed a two-year art residency at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago.
