Jessica Barber takes a highly intuitive approach to her work, drawing inspiration from the contrast between organic and man-made forms. She captures the essence of her subject matter utilizing color and texture as her primary focus. She views mixed media and printmaking as the ideal way to communicate her vision, employing a combination of painterly monotypes, direct application of oil and pastels, cyanotype photography, and the addition of hand-pulled polyester plate lithography and other transfer methods.
For this exhibit, Barber celebrates the richness of the color blue in content and/or process, whether in varied depictions of flora and fauna supported (or washed up) by wetlands, streams, or oceans, or through the brilliant Prussian blue of cyanotypes. Still other pieces are simply inspired by curiosities found “out of the blue” during her wanderings through the Mid-Atlantic and South Florida within both natural and urban settings.
Opening Reception: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 6-9 pm
