Landscape and Culture: Expedition Art of the Scottish Hebrides
Exhibition location: 320 W. 23rd St. NYC, NY
Fourteen watercolor paintings by June Julian document two seasons of Art and Archaeology collaborative fieldwork on the beautiful remote islands of North Uist and Valley in the Scottish Hebrides. This research was sponsored by two Explorers Club Expedition Flag Awards,
and has implications for the effects of climate change on shoreline cultural heritage worldwide.
The paintings show provocative but endangered coastal landscapes and integrate fragmenting clan tartans into images of depopulating ancestral lands.
