Featuring: Kathleen Shaver
Beyond the Paint is Kathleen Shaver’s first solo exhibition in NYC, featuring recent oil paintings and sculptures. Her large canvases are characterized by a thick build-up of pigment and richly textured surfaces. Ambiguous shapes, scratched markings and repeated patterns record a kind of primal searching as well as her love of paint. Written language or a code of communication seem possible in the random markings. Recognizable forms suggest themselves in mysterious or playful ways.
Shaver’s small-scale sculptures in plaster and papier–mâché are similarly primal in character. Talisman-like, they suggest symbols and rituals. The form of the human body, its flesh, and the textures of the earth—stone, wood, and soil—are a unifying theme.
